Mission and Tasks
The NTM-I mission has always been fundamentally concerned with structures and institutions – building and developing enduring, national self-sustaining capabilities in the Iraqi Security Forces. Furthermore, NTM-I has always been a relatively small, tactical size organisation, with limited resources but one that has had a strategic impact on Iraq.

Mission statement
Provide training and assistance to the Iraqi Security Forces in order to contribute to the development of Iraqi training structures and institutions, so that Iraq can continue to build effective and sustainable multi-ethnic security forces which address the security needs of the Iraqi people.

Organisation
NTM-I comprises three divisions, supporting three main lines of activity:
  • Training and education, which includes the professionalization of officer training and education; the professional development of the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer cadre; doctrine development and the coordination of out-of-country training for all Iraqi Security Forces.
  • Operations Centers, for advising and mentoring at the Prime Minister's, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Interior National Operations Cells.
  • Security Force Training for the Ministry of Interior. This comprises the training and professionalism of the Iraqi Federal Police by the Italian Carabinieri.

NTM-I works closely with its partners in the Iraqi Ministries of Defense and
Interior:

  • Building Capability for Internal Security and External Defense
  • Professionalizing the Army and Federal Police
  • Setting the conditions for Police Primacy, and
  • Establishing support for the Rule of Law: democratic policing and evidence-based law enforcement
  • Improving representation of Iraqi society within ISF.
